Join Us for the Bethel Baptist Church & Legacy Room Open House!

Step into history and celebrate a cornerstone of Gloucester’s African American heritage at the Bethel Baptist Church & Legacy Room Open House.

Founded in 1867 by 16 formerly enslaved individuals, Bethel Baptist Church is one of the oldest African American congregations in the county. Originally known as the Old Sassafras Stage Church, this sacred space has been a foundation for faith, resilience, and community.

Tour the Legacy Room, where you’ll discover preserved artifacts and powerful stories that trace the church’s legacy — including its role in founding five other congregations:
Morning Glory
Smithfield
Shepherdsville
New Mount Zion
Mount Gilead

Special Tribute: Visit the gravesite of Thomas C. Walker, Jr. (1862–1953) — Gloucester’s first Black lawyer and a leader in justice and education.

Whether you’re a longtime member, a local history enthusiast, or new to the area, this open house offers a meaningful opportunity to honor the past and reflect on our shared journey forward.

This event is proudly supported by the Gloucester 250th Committee as part of our ongoing celebration of Gloucester County’s rich history.
