The Gloucester County Friends of the Library are grateful for monetary donations. These donations provide funding for the many wonderful programs, events and activities that library staff plan and implement. Be a part of the great work going on at the library! Thanks for your support!

Please limit quantities to two bankers boxes or three grocery bags per week.
Book donations are accepted at the Main Library ONLY.
Gloucester Community Foundation
The Gloucester Community Foundation (GCF) was established in 2000 to preserve and enhance the quality of life in Gloucester County through philanthropy. GCF continues to grow with the addition of new funds, matching grants and generous donations. The Gloucester Library Endowment, founded in 1990, became a partner of GCF in 2008.

Friends of the Library
The Gloucester County Friends of the Library is a volunteer, nonprofit organization established in 1983 to supplement library resources. A $5 membership supports library services and programs and provides funds for books and other materials. While the Friends accept donations of new and used books, monetary contributions and memorials are welcomed as well! Join the Friends today! New faces, new ideas and new volunteers!

Material Donations
The Friends of the Library are grateful for the generous material donations. Effective July 1, 2021, material donations will be limited to two bankers boxes or three grocery bags. Please view the guidelines (PDF) for other specifics about making donations.
Book Store
Spend time browsing the shelves in the Friends’ Book Store at the Main Library. There is quite an assortment:

Crafts
History
Novels and much, much more on sale
Some items are brand new! Visit often for the numerous sales, special items and other surprises! The Book Store is open during regular library hours.
Gift Certificates
Purchase gift certificates from the Friends of the Library Book Store. These certificates make great gifts or use them at the Friends’ annual book sales for books, AV materials, totes and t-shirts. Ask any library staff member for information or to purchase a gift certificate.
Please note: gift certificates cannot be used for library services, such as fines, copies, faxes or payment of lost or damaged materials.
History of the Library
1914: Mrs. Elinor Cochran Stewart donated 125 books to form the core of a lending library at Gloucester Woman's Club, Long Bridge Ordinary.
1925: The library was relocated to the County Clerk's office. When the collection totaled 2,000 volumes the library moved to offices in the Bank of Gloucester.
1933: A bequest of $10,000 by Mrs. Stewart provided the basis to purchase land and construct the original Gloucester Library on Main Street.
1935: This new library was formally dedicated on June 27, 1935.
1956: A children's wing was added through the efforts of Stuart W. Jackson. The Virginia Room was funded by a contribution from Mr. and Mrs. George H. Cunningham in 1973.
1985: The Point Branch Library opened in the Tidemill Center.
1987: A 3,500 square foot expansion was added to the Gloucester Library and dedicated with the assistance of Mr. Henry A. Schutz serving as President of the Library Board of Trustees and the Gloucester Library Endowment Foundation.
1992: The Point Branch relocated to space on George Washington Highway.
1993: The Bookmobile began operation.
1999: The library system became automated.
2004: The Gloucester County Public Library upgraded to a 24,000 square foot facility in the Main Street Center.
2011: The Gloucester Point Branch Library upgraded to a 3,916 square foot facility in the York River Crossing Shopping Center, October 15, 2011.
2014: 100 year anniversary of the Gloucester County Public Library.
