Bio Blitz 2026 Results!

Exploring Gloucester's Wild Side: The 2026 BioBlitz!

From August 1 through October 1, Gloucester Clean Community invited residents and nature enthusiasts to get outside, explore, and discover the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us during the 4th Annual Gloucester BioBlitz!

The mission? To document as many plants, animals, insects, and other living organisms as possible during a designated period, creating a snapshot of the amazing wildlife that calls Gloucester County home.

From buzzing bees and colorful butterflies to fascinating fungi, native plants, and creatures hiding in plain sight, this year's BioBlitz encouraged participants to slow down, look a little closer, and discover just how much life is thriving in our own backyards.

What Exactly Is a BioBlitz?

A BioBlitz is a community-driven effort to identify and document as many species as possible within a specific area and timeframe. Think of it as a nature scavenger hunt with a scientific purpose!

BioBlitz events bring together everyday nature lovers, students, families, photographers, and experienced naturalists to explore their surroundings and contribute to our understanding of local biodiversity.

While discovering new species is exciting, BioBlitz events serve a much larger purpose. The information collected helps create a record of the plants and wildlife living in an area, providing valuable insights into local ecosystems and how they may change over time.

By documenting what we see today, we can help build a better understanding of Gloucester's natural environment for tomorrow.

Turning Everyday Observations Into Citizen Science with iNaturalist

One of the most exciting aspects of Gloucester's BioBlitz is that anyone can participate, regardless of their experience identifying plants or wildlife!

Participants used iNaturalist, a free nature identification and community science platform, to photograph and record their discoveries.

Here's how it works:

  1. Explore: Head outside to a local park, nature trail, garden, shoreline, or even your own backyard.

  2. Observe: Spot an interesting plant, insect, animal, or other living organism.

  3. Document: Take a clear photograph and upload it to iNaturalist, along with the location and date of the observation.

  4. Identify: iNaturalist offers identification suggestions, while a worldwide community of naturalists and knowledgeable users can help confirm or refine the identification.

  5. Contribute: Eligible observations within the BioBlitz area and dates can become part of the local project, helping build a collective record of Gloucester's biodiversity.

What's especially exciting about iNaturalist is that observations can contribute to real scientific research. Records that meet certain data-quality requirements may be shared with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), where scientists and researchers can use biodiversity data to study species distributions, environmental changes, and conservation needs.

That means a simple photograph of a butterfly visiting your garden could become part of a much larger scientific effort!

A Record-Breaking Year for Gloucester's BioBlitz!

This year's BioBlitz brought together an enthusiastic community of observers who helped make the fourth annual event a tremendous success!

2026 BioBlitz by the Numbers

  • 128 observers participated in documenting Gloucester's natural world.

  • 7,362 observations were recorded throughout the event.

  • 1,802 species were documented across the county.

  • More than 3,000 additional observations were recorded compared to last year's BioBlitz!

Each observation contributed another piece to the puzzle of Gloucester's biodiversity. From familiar backyard visitors to species that often go unnoticed, the results demonstrate just how much there is to discover when we take the time to explore.

Our very own Park Ranger, Monica Canepa, noticed an unusual-looking white flower with what looked like red fruits. After taking pictures and uploading to iNaturalist, she began to see lots of comments going back and forth between scientists. At that point she knew this was not your everyday native Gloucester plant! Finding the plant at Beaverdam meant she not only discovered a whole new habitat the plant can grow in, but that she also found the southernmost coastal population of the plant in the world. What an amazing discovery at our very own Beaverdam!

Why These Discoveries Matter

Gloucester is home to a variety of natural habitats, including forests, wetlands, freshwater environments, tidal shorelines, and residential landscapes. Each provides important resources for plants, wildlife, and pollinators.

By participating in the BioBlitz, residents help document the species found in these environments and create a growing record that can be compared from year to year.

These observations can help naturalists and researchers better understand where species occur, recognize changes in local biodiversity, and identify areas that may deserve additional study.

The BioBlitz also reminds us that conservation begins with awareness. The more we understand about the natural world around us, the better equipped we are to appreciate and protect it.

A Big Thank You to Our Nature Enthusiasts!

A special shout-out goes to our top five BioBlitz contributors, who collectively submitted an incredible 5,177 observations!

Their dedication, curiosity, and countless hours spent exploring Gloucester's natural spaces made an enormous contribution to this year's results.

We also want to thank every resident, family, student, and nature enthusiast who participated. Whether you submitted hundreds of observations or photographed your very first pollinator, you helped make this community science effort a success.

Keep Exploring, Gloucester!

Although the 2026 BioBlitz has officially wrapped up, the opportunity to explore and document nature never ends!

Residents are encouraged to continue using iNaturalist throughout the year to discover local wildlife, learn about unfamiliar species, and contribute to the growing body of community science data.

You never know what incredible discovery could be waiting in your own backyard!
