The Middle Peninsula chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists and Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism are sponsoring a moth event on Friday, July 24, 2026 at 7:30 pm. at the north entrance of Beaverdam Park off Fary's Mill Rd. in Gloucester. MPMN members and moth enthusiasts will lead a night filled with fun moth activities at the park during National Moth Week.
Moth-ers Night Out! on July 24 will begin with a short walk to hunt for caterpillars and host plants. At 8:00 pm, a presentation on moths will be given with games and crafts to follow and a moth syrup attractant contest. Amphibian enthusiasts will be on-hand to provide information on frog calls and moth and bat identification. At 9:15 pm, attendees will have the opportunity to observe and identify the moths attracted to the moth observation sheets and the special UV lamps set up to attract them. The data collected will be entered into a national database.
The program is free and open to the public. Registration is necessary. Bring a flashlight and water, and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Participants are asked to use any bug spray away from the moth observation area. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at 7:30 pm at the picnic shelter at the Rt 606 entrance to Beaverdam Park—9537 Fary's Mill Rd.
