Paper & Cardboard
Cardboard box packaging (i.e., cereal boxes)
Corrugated cardboard (flattened)
Junk mail
Newspaper and magazines
Office paper and envelopes
Paper bags
Phone books
GREASY PIZZA BOXES ARE A BIG NO-NO! Paper and cardboard for recycling must be clean.
Plastic
Currently we can ONLY recycle plastic containers that meet both:
Must have #1 or # 2 in the recycle symbol, AND
Must be a bottle or jug with a neck smaller than the body. (for example: milk jugs, water bottles)
Plastic lids and caps CAN be recycled. The "neck smaller than body" requirement is because it indicates a specific grade of plastic that is used in blow molds.
Metal Cans
Aluminum cans
Empty aerosol cans that have no slosh or hiss
Metal food cans (e.g. tuna cans)
ALL ITEMS MUST BE CLEAN AND DRY before putting in recycling container.
Rinsed aluminum drink cans may also be deposited at one of the Giving Garden Foundation’s five Can Cottage locations:
Abingdon Ruritan Club on Guinea Road
Main Street Shopping Center
Gloucester Moose Family Center on Moose Drive
Franktronics at 3618 George Washington Memorial Hwy.
Mathews High School on Buckley Hall Road in Mathews

To join, you can register using the button below or you can call or email the Clean Community Coordinator 804-693-5370.
For court-mandated community service, ask your probation officer to call Parks, Recreation & Tourism at 804-693-2107 for verification. We do not provide community service work to minors. Volunteer on the Clean and Green Committee
This board serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors and Clean Community staff on matters related to litter prevention, solid waste management, recycling, and beautification. Meetings are comprised of the Clean Community Coordinator, a Board of Supervisors representative, and voting members approved by the Gloucester Board of Supervisors. Meetings are once every other month for approximately one hour. For information on recent and past activities of the Clean Community Committee, please refer to the meeting minutes archive at the County’s Meetings and Minutes Portal.

Bee City USA
Gloucester is officially an affiliate of Bee City USA!!
Gloucester County Clean Community sponsors the Bee City USA – Gloucester County program. The mission of Bee City USA is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators, responsible for the reproduction of almost 90% of the world’s flowering plant species, by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants, and free to nearly free of pesticides.
Why Gloucester makes a great affiliate for Bee City USA
Maintaining habitat and forage for bees and other pollinators is essential to the sustainability and resilience of our local environment.
Resources for bees include many flowering plants, thus enhancing the natural beauty of Gloucester.
Maintaining habitats conducive to bees and other pollinators will support local farm and garden efforts by increasing pollination of fruits and vegetables, as well as flowers.
