Gloucester County has two volunteer fire departments that dutifully respond to emergencies across our area: Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc., and Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc. AVFR serves the southern part of Gloucester, and GVFRS serves the northern part.

While these departments are not under the County government, they’ve partnered with our Sheriff’s Office to offer emergency life-saving aid for nearly 100 years. Their impact on our county has been immeasurable.

These departments welcome volunteers of all ages and experiences. Whether your day job is firefighting or finance, medicine or marketing, if you want to help, there’s a spot for you. We’ve included a few videos about what they do on a daily basis, but to watch the rest, click here.
